This has got to be our most successful activity to date.
And it wasn't even part of "school".
Though I must admit that I haven't been consistent in "Mama School" ever since we started planning for the trip (which got postponed).
This was an activity for J since she had been stuck at home for 3 days due to her fever then. That evening she was admitted into hospital.
"Five little speckled frog" has been on our playlist for a long time.
We've tried finger play with this song while on our way to the mall.
I thought it'll be fun to have a sensory bin/ props of sort.
And since the paper towel roll was looking at me, and I happen to have some materials on hand, why not?
Materials used:
Paper towel tube
Origami paper with wood design, $2 from Daiso
Green poms poms
Googly eyes
Green paper
Some white glue
I let J pick out the wood-patterned paper she wanted. There are four designs in the pack of origami paper I had. I'm glad she picked out the wood grains instead of wooden planks. She insisted on the lighter shade so here it is.
I showed J how to put white glue onto the paper towel tube with a Q-tip. She had a go and didn't quite like that she got her fingers sticky, so she helped to stick the paper instead. I'm usually picky about how smooth the paper goes over but since we are making a log here, I kind of like that creases appeared. I had also wanted to let J stick on the eyes by herself but she wasn't able to put sufficient glue onto the pom poms. So I did that and let her place the eyes instead. We practised a bit of patience while waiting for the glue to dry.
J later stuck the pompoms onto some pre-cut "legs" I did beforehand.
And ta-daa..!
Our frog that doesn't look quite like a frog.
J had fun though. She was eager to pick out a piece of blue paper for the water.
I'm still looking at more interesting fillers for the bin. I have some blue feathers that would be fun but those don't look so much water, so I guess we'll just have to stick with the paper for now.
We rushed to the hospital shortly after it was completed so when J finally came home and saw it a week later, she was really excited to see "five little speckled frogs!" who have since suffered the unfortunate fate of being tossed around.
