This is the sensory bin from last night.
We didn't plan to have a sensory bin activity but J was trying to find all sorts of ways to get us to allow her to bathe in her kiddy pool. We didn't, due to her runny nose and the haze. Baths were at the fastest possible speed last evening because of the bad haze conditions. So she brought out the doll and declared that it needed a bath. Of course the doll needed a bath!
I whipped out the TROFAST bin like I had magic and told her "There!!! Doll's bathtub!".
Actually I do. All mothers do.
(PS: We have a wonderful imagination and sometimes can be great white-liars too. Sorry.)
I added in the prickly, sparkly pompoms I got from DAISO to act as the foam. I didn't want to deal with real ones when J already has had her bath. "Prickly" would be a nice new texture for J to explore.
Textures!!
Let's Tot School is doing texture this week so it would be fun to hop onto the bandwagon and follow along! I had felt buttons in the same stash. These rough and sturdy discs could be soap. Or bubbles. Or whatever. I just needed more fillers. I'd love coloured rice though but my mum is very against playing with food, rice in particular.
J had a great time scrubbing her doll with the pompoms and her buttons. I think it helped that her uncle and our neighbour were playing with her. She even got into the bin for a 'bath'. It's funny to see her attempting to squeeze herself in. But she didn't have a long attention span, as usual, so the bin got abandoned and she moved on to the plastic eggs. Which she dumped into the bin, then dumped the contents all together. The activity quickly evolved into a berry-picking (the pompoms) and egg collecting pretend-play. I think I got more excited than she did because I totally pictured a blackberry bush in front of me, only that I don't actually know what it looks like.
This morning, she took the bin and sat in it again. And rocked like she was in a boat.
All while I took the pomspoms away and tested out the camera on my phone after a failed colour-sorting activity.
We didn't do much the whole afternoon until it was about 4 plus because I had to head home to pack.
I gave her a simple matching activity to do just before dinner. I didn't have time to print out the TOOB key, but realised that the sticker pack Aunty W got for her has got most of the animals from out latest TOOB purchase so we used that. I actually prefer to do this than using the TOOB key because I wanted to see if J could identify the animals/sea creatures whether they are in clipart or actual form.
She didn't appear to be interested in the activity initially so the penguin waddled and asked for help.
"Please help me find my friend!"
Told you I had magic.
That worked and I saw J's eyes moving, trying to locate the picture of a penguin.
I love doing matching because that is one of the rare times when J sits quietly and you can tell that she is really concentrating. I haven't see that in the other activities I have given her.
Dinner time was also playdough time.
I tried to be a little more deliberate in how I presented the materials to her this time round.
I prepared an additional green dough and picked out two creatures that are rough, and two that are smooth. The frosted glass pebbles also had a rough surface while the clear ones are really smooth.
We tried to do a little smooth/rough sorting but that didn't work.
It's okay, I guess. J did explore the materials I laid out in front of her.
She started playing only with the playdough and so I had to model and show her that we can stick the pebbles onto the playdough. Don't ignore them! J followed suit and started pushing the pebbles into the playdough but she got bored after a while. We ended up wrapping the pebbles and animals in the dough and asked each other to find them.
This batch of playdough turned out way better than our previous ones. I think it's because they are not too dry. They stretch quite well too. And because we keep them in the refrigerator, they are quite cool to the touch. A fun sensory experience I'd say!
Dear little J got sleepy soon after so we did only two activities today.
I am a pretty laidback momma so I guess two a day is sufficient.
Unstructured play and allowing her to be bored during some parts of the day would be good for her! Right?
That's what a friend told me, and I believe her. You know who you are!
Here's what we did for Ocean Week.
